indefinitely.

But new research suggests something surprising: your gut bacteria may already be trying to remove them — certainly from the G.I. tract, and likely paving the way for cellular detoxification.

The Problem Everyone Is Talking About

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are now found almost everywhere thanks to Teflon, razor blade easy glide surfaces, machine parts, and hundreds more products. They are now embedded into:

drinking water

food supply

soil

even human blood and breast milk

They’re called “forever chemicals” because they don’t degrade in the environment—or in the body. That’s what makes them so concerning. So naturally, the conversation has turned toward detox, and that’s where things get interesting.

A Different Way to Think About Detox

Most detox conversations focus on adding lots of supplements — glutathione, methyl B-vitamins, botanical cleansers— protocols that take months, even a full year, and let’s not forget the charcoal and zeolite binders.

But what if the more important question is: Is your body even equipped to remove toxins efficiently in the first place? Because detox isn’t just something you do, it’s something that your body has always been designed to do, continuously.

New science demonstrates that the most important system that’s heavily involved in body, cell, and brain detoxification is your gut microbiome which has authority over cell membrane toxin release, lymphatic and glymphatic drainage, disassembly of toxins, bile, and kidney excretion.

The Role of Gut Bacteria

Your gut isn’t just digesting food. It’s a part of an amazing ecosystem that:

interacts with toxins

transforms compounds

supports elimination pathways—start to finish

And now, research is beginning to show something even more specific—certain gut bacteria are able to bind, degrade, or help remove PFAS compounds from the body. That’s a very different model than “nothing can be done, ”

Top Bacteria Getting Attention

One species in particular has been getting attention in emerging research is Bacteroides Uniformis and others like it. These are naturally occurring gut microbes when conditions support them.

Some studies suggest that microbiomes like these can interact with PFAS compounds in the gut, reduce their absorption into the body, and support their elimination through normal pathways.

In other words, your body may already have a system designed to help manage these compounds — if prior antibiotic use and lack of prebiotic fibers haven’t precluded it. So, the bigger question is, is that system intact?

The Bigger Question

For decades, we humans have been exposed to antibiotics, ultra-processed foods, environmental stressors, chemical loads, so we must stop and ask, “Do most people still have a microbiome capable of protecting them effectively?”

If the microbiome is depleted or imbalanced, then we know that detox pathways become less efficient, compounds may start to recirculate instead of being eliminated, and the burden on the body increases. So, the problem isn’t just the exposure, it’s the body’s capacities.

In clinical nutrition, we gain powerful insights from laboratory stool tests that report on the microbiome’s viability.

A Shift in Perspective

This changes how we think about detox entirely. Instead of asking: “How do I remove toxins?” We start asking: “What systems does my body rely on to remove them—and are those systems supported?”

How do we go about supporting those systems? At a foundational level, this means:

Supporting microbial diversity

Providing the nutrients those microbes depend on

Reducing ongoing toxic burden where possible

Strengthening the body’s natural elimination pathways

Not forcing detox, but restoring the systems that makes detox possible.

The Takeaway

The idea that “forever chemicals” are completely immovable is being challenged. Not because we’ve invented a perfect solution, but because we’re beginning to understand the systems already in place.

Our bodies are not passive. They’re adaptive and they already seek solutions.

One of the most practical steps we can take today is to support the very systems designed to help. This means restoring key microbial allies—often referred to as keystone species—and providing the nourishment they depend on to function.

These organisms don’t operate in isolation. They require the right inputs to survive, grow, and carry out their roles:

Diverse, fiber-rich foods that act as prebiotics

Polyphenol-rich plants that support microbial balance

Nutrient-dense “superfoods” that help rebuild the terrain

When these elements are in place, the microbiome becomes more than a passive inhabitant; it becomes an active participant in detoxification, immune regulation, clear thinking, hormone balance, and overall resilience.

The question is: Are we supporting that process—or working against it?

Peptides: Smart Signals or Iffy Shortcuts?

Peptide Reality It feels like upgrading biology from blunt-force chemistry to targeted messaging, with the seductive idea that we can fine-tune function rather than override it.

At the simplest level, peptides are short chains of amino acids—tiny messengers that tell the body what to do. Think: repair this, burn that, calm down, reconnect, perk up.

Because they’re signaling molecules—not blunt-force, toxic drugs—they’ve earned a reputation for being more biocompatible, more “physiological,” in tune with the body’s own intracellular language.

That promise is driving the surge… along with a healthy assist from enthusiastic marketing and a few “miracle cure” headlines that might benefit from a deep breath.

Peptide Headliners

Most all peptide offerings fall into one of four themes: Push metabolism, Accelerate repair, Stimulate growth, Modulate mood or drive.

In other words, they nudge the dials on systems our bodies already run.

Efficacy—A Real Question

Peptides definitely do something. That’s not in dispute. It just makes sense—they’re not foreign invaders, but fragments of the body’s own language, tapping receptors already trained to listen. They’re part of the original signaling vocabulary.

Bigger Picture, Better Question

The better question is: Do they do what they’re supposed to do… in a whole human system… over time?

Because peptides don’t operate in isolation. They drop into a living network—endocrine rhythms, immune signaling, microbiome chatter, nutrient status.

So, the host is part of the effectiveness and outcome equation.

If the host’s terrain is disorganized, peptides can feel like sending beautifully written emails to a company with no management structure. The message is delivered… what happens next is anyone’s guess. Likely eighty-sixed along with the limp kale garnish—there for color, not commitment.

Peptides Come From?

This is the least discussed—and most important—part of the conversation.

Dead bovine tissue? Chemical labs? Bacteria vats? Yes. Yes. And Yes.

Modern peptides are often chemically synthesized (precision-built), sometimes produced via engineered microbes (biotech vats), and occasionally derived from tissue extracts (more complex biological mixtures).

Translation: not all peptides are created equal. Not even close. Some are synthesized outside of Nature’s guidance, but the scientific short-sighted litany is “hey, a molecule is a molecule, is a molecule.” (Gertrude Stein of “a rose is a rose…” fame filed an infringement suit.)

There is a difference between chemical-assemblies and naturally derived molecular structures. It’s the “biological warp” — an essential element that avoids cis/trans geometric isomers (mirroring) and chiral nuances that mean the molecular key doesn’t quite fit the cellular lock.

Science, quick to call a molecule a molecule, still calls synthetic vitamin E “Vitamin E” even though it’s only 1/8th as good as what Mother Nature constructs. (Another story for another fireside WellnessWiz chat.)

Peptides are as fragile as a new year’s resolution in February. Heat, light, time, and sloppy handling degrade them. One vial may be pristine. The next… well… let’s call it “aspirational.”

A little Wild West? You betcha! Somewhere between frontier medicine and a YouTube tutorial with a ring light. Like measuring micrograms with the confidence of a barista eyeballing oat milk—close enough… probably, doing a fine job with the foam image and heart icon on the cup.

The Angle We’re Not Hearing

Peptides may be less like tools… and more like questions. They ask the body: are you ready to respond?

If the answer is yes—nutrients sufficient, detox pathways open, microbiome coherent, circadian rhythm intact—the response can be elegant. Repair improves. Inflammation settles. Metabolism shifts. And if the molecules are genuinely natural … Results galore!

If the answer is no, the body improvises. Sometimes that still looks like progress. Sometimes it’s a short-term win followed by a longer-term stall. Occasionally, it’s a scenic detour you didn’t plan.

Peptides — The Metabolic Amplifiers

Peptides are amplifiers, not originators. They don’t create health—they reveal the state of it.

Which leads to the question that actually matters: Before asking, “Which peptide should I take?” Ask: If peptides whisper to my biology… is my receiver tuned?

2400 years ago, Socrates popularized, “know thyself.” So why? Because the unsexy truth—the one that won’t trend on TikTok—is this: Peptide signaling only works if the receiver is ready.

Hydration matters. Minerals matter. The microbiome—especially its ability to generate postbiotic signals like butyrate—matters. Liver clearance matters. (I’ll provide a link to a state of the art DNA test for the bold and adventurous below.) Sleep timing matters.

These aren’t background details. They’re the infrastructure. They should be addressed first.

Without them, even a pristine peptide is just… a very polite suggestion.

Plant Peptides — The Softer Sounds

Plant peptides are the quieter cousins in the peptide conversation—small signaling molecules naturally embedded in foods like legumes, grains, and seeds.

Rather than forcing a loud, pharmacologic “command,” they tend to nudge physiology: supporting antioxidant defenses, modulating inflammation, and gently influencing metabolic and satiety pathways.

In that sense, they behave less like a Marshall stack wall-of-sound amplification, and more like chamber music resonance—subtle, context-aware, and working with the body’s existing rhythms rather than overriding them.

The Takeaway (Biodegradable Container, Of Course)

So yes—peptides are fascinating. Promising. Even powerful.

But they are not magic. (Sorry, Charlie. Had to be said.)

They are, at best, beautifully phrased instructions handed to a body that may—or may not—be ready to follow them.

And that’s the real upgrade path: Not louder instructions… but a better listener.

Because peptides don’t install new software—they simply press harder on the existing buttons.

And if a button is stuck, disconnected, or wired to the wrong circuit… pressing harder isn’t always progress.

Wellness Wizdom Pearl

Ask not only what the peptide does—ask how cleanly (natural) the peptide message is made, preserved, stored, and delivered; and whether your body is ready to receive it.

After all, not everyone is ready to suffer culture shock like Dylan at Newport with Pete Seeger grabbing an axe. The body doesn’t need shockwaves, just nutritional nurture and harmony.

For more information on DNA testing featuring 137 health reports, click here to learn more about the vital insights that understanding your unique genome brings and how to bolster weak links for more optimal health.

WellnessWiz’s Substack is a reader-supported publication. it’s so gloriously absurd it deserves its own category at the county fair.

Must admit, I did feel re-energized on a hike through the redwoods after standing, in silence and awe, with my spine pressed against the timeless witness’ trunk, arms extended in the DaVinci perfect man pose (though my pose fell slightly short of geometric perfection). Truly. And nootropic herbs indeed have raised my I.Q. (but not my personality which is often compared to a dead catfish).

Like Robert Duvall said in the movie, Apocalypse Now, I love the smell of a coffee enema in the morning. Did I get that right?

Recently, David H., a colleague and friend in New Zealand, honored me with being on his Biohacking Healing board of directors. He’s a champion of biohacking, a devotee of the bullet-proof, butter-in-your-coffee guy, Dave Asprey, (that’s oral coffee, by the way). He’s taking the science of biohacking genetics to the next level. Interesting stuff.

Enter: Mouth Taping

The modern bedtime ritual where a fully competent adult looks in the mirror and says, “You know what this situation needs? Less airway and more adhesive.”

And the spouse agrees, “Less verbarrhea, more silence is golden.”

Somewhere along the line, Put a sock in it,” evolved into a full-blown biohack.

Mouth taping? Like all good stories and hacks, it’s founded in an element of reality.

Now, to be fair, nasal breathing is not crazy. It’s how we humans were designed to breathe—filters, humidifies, threat assessment. It delivers that nice little nitric oxide bonus for vascular regulation, aka blood pressure. All good. Sensible. Respectable.

Snoz Trek

Some Biohack cultures occasionally have ways of taking “sensible” and driving it three exits past reason. Part of the fun and exhilaration. Like doing a cold plunge after a sauna.

Tape… the final frontier. These are the voyages of the bedtime biohacker. Its nightly mission: to explore strange new breathing patterns, to seek out quieter snoring and deeper sleep… to boldly go three exits past fix-the-cause, where no airway has comfortably gone before.

Captain’s log: 2300 hours. Subject has applied adhesive to the secondary respiration portal. Nostrils are online, though decidedly skeptical due to the pollen count.

Spock raises an eyebrow: “Fascinating. The subject has chosen to override a redundant survival mechanism in favor of a trend that fails to address the cause.”

McCoy, tricorder beeping: “Dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a roll of tape. Everyone knows that snoring is an effect of inflammation, glucose dysregulation, loss of neuromuscular tone, lymphatic congestion, thyroid dysfunction, dysbiosis, even bile acid signaling.”

Scotty, slamming down a haggis, “I can’t remove the tape until the dilithium crystals are in harmonic convergence with the tisra til. Pull the tape now and the whole nasal manifold will blow.”

And here we are… lying still, lips sealed, hoping our microbiomes appreciate the theatrical commitment. All in the name of optimization.

Because nothing says “advanced physiology” quite like voluntarily muting one’s face and calling it a protocol.

So now we have people sealing their lips like leftovers, hoping to wake up optimized. We can almost hear the internal dialogue: “I’m not sleeping… I’m upgrading firmware.”

There’s also the subtle social angle. Imagine explaining this to houseguests: “Mubbbleh dbibbepah brrrroptalop” … then ripping off the tape, “No, no, nothing’s wrong. I just voluntarily silence myself every night for wellness.” At which point they nod slowly and begin Googling alternate accommodations.

<picture></picture>

Marital Harmony

And let’s talk about trust in the marital bed. Years ago, love enraptured, it was, “Wither thou goest, I will go. Where thou lodgest I will lodge ...”

“And witherest I snore like a whoopee cushion sputtering the national anthem?”

“Then I will stoppest up my ears with plugs. Nothing shall stoppeth me from cuddling with my beloved …”

Then thirty years later, “If you don’t stop snoring like Pumbaa-the-warthog in The Lion King, I’m stuffing a tennis sock in your pie hole.”

“What, no hakuna matata, tonight?”

Next, the duct tape. Just makes sense. Duct tape is the new bailing wire. Fixes everything.

So, with mouth taping, biohackers place a strip of surgical tape across the only backup breathing system the body keeps in reserve for emergencies. The brain, which has spent a few million years refining “don’t suffocate,” now has to negotiate with CVS-brand adhesive at 2:13 a.m.

That’s a bold partnership. Of course, the biohack pitch sounds elegant. Better sleep. Less snoring, More oxygen efficiency. All reasonable goals. If only the tape were applied before those snarky words escaped during waking hours.

But here’s the quiet question underneath the tape: Why is the mouth open in the first place? Why is the uvula (that dangly punchin’ bag thingy in the back of the throat) flapping like a gargling gargoyle?

Congestion, airway resistance, craniofacial structure, microbiome signaling, inflammation—there’s a whole upstream committee meeting going on, and we’ve adjourned it with Scotch tape. Yes, it’s multifaceted and complicated, but yet, it is the body’s early warning that something needs to be corrected.

Mouth taping is the biological equivalent to the medical practice of putting duct tape over the “check engine” light and declaring the car fixed.

Which brings us to the punchline: If a biohack requires us to restrain our faces before bed… we might pause just long enough to ask whether we’re solving a problem—or just muzzling it.

By all means, experiment. Humans are tinkerers. Stick a candle in your ear and fire it up, tape that trap shut, run that hose up your sense of adventure.

But if your nightly routine starts to resemble a low-budget escape room, it may be time to zoom out and consult those who demonstrate corrective methods — homeopathy, acupuncture, lifestyle changes. Because true physiology doesn’t usually need to be tricked, trapped, or taped into submission. It just needs the conditions to work.

And preferably… a clear airway and an untaped sense of humor. After all, we find “snoring (stertorous respiration) in the homeopathic repertory with a 200-year legacy of solutions.

My wife, Janine, elbowing me in the short ribs at midnight, asks, “Dear, have you thought about mouth taping?”

“Yes, many, many times,” I replied.

“I mean for yourself …”

Oh well, sleeping on the couch again …

The Velvet Rope and Your Gut Superclub

Microbial Bouncers: Who Gets In, Who Stays music, conversation, guest celebrities - a fun and gala time.

There’s a velvet rope. Burly bouncers. A guest list. Special treatment for welcome guests. All the excitement inside this happenin’ place.

Just like here in Austin, Matthew McConaughey gets celebrity access as a fun and engaging persona. Never know, maybe he’ll play naked bongos like it’s 1999.

Microscopically, every bite of food, pathogenic bug, and toxin without a reservation is trying to get past the door.

Biology of Boundaries

When the vetting process works, we get nourishment, postbiotic compounds, peaceful digestion, cellular health, and resilience. When it fails, we get chaos — bloating, inflammation, food sensitivities, histamine reactions, immune confusion, brain fog, rapid or slow transit, and bad behaviors.

This isn’t just digestion. This is border control for an entire person’s biology.

Meet the Bouncer Squad

• The Mucus Layer – The velvet rope barrier. Sticky, selective, constantly renewed. Keeps riffraff out, “move along, nothing to see here,” while wining-and-dining the selected throng inside.

• Tight Junctions — The door hinges and seal. If the mucus layer is the velvet rope, tight junctions are the actual door—sealed, selective, and under constant supervision.

• sIgA – The bouncer with the wristband scanner. The immune system’s Secretory IgA tags what belongs and what doesn’t. Friendlies get a pass (e.g. Austin denizens Sandra Bullock, Robert Plant, Woody Harrelson, and Kevin Costner, gain a quick velvet rope lift). Spread the good cheer.

Troublemakers get denied, and should they gain access, they get bounced out, often rudely.

• Bile Acids – The nightclub enforcers. Not just for fat digestion. Bile is antimicrobial, a regulatory signaler (inhibits overgrowth), and selectors (favor wholesome foods and celebrity keystone species). It determines who gets into the VIP lounge and how the place-cards are arranged..

• Microbiome – Bacterial regulars and the security detail. Keystone species don’t just hang out—they enforce order. They get compatriots on the guest list. They produce antimicrobial compounds, crowd out invaders, and maintain a lively vibe — bongos and glamour.

The squad performs at the wishes of the owner, the gracious host. The gut isn’t a passive tube. It actively makes key decisions. Every day, it’s ascertaining, “You can come in and stay, but you must get out.”

And here’s the twist: The strength of the body’s decision-making system depends on how well we feed and support it. It depends on a happy, healthy, well-fed gala generating revenue called postbiotic compounds.

What Breaks the System (Party Poopers)
• Low fiber → starving the bouncer squad
• Poor bile flow → little to no enforcement
• Chronic stress → distracted security
• Ultra-processed and GMO dietary substances (mislabeled as “food.” ) Yes, Fake IDs everywhere
• Microbial depletion → no regular customers, empty tables.

If the velvet rope sags, everything gets in, good guys, bad guys, gawkers, and underaged revelers. It’s a free for all that results in wild west shootouts, mistakes, and mayhem.

Leaky gut isn’t just “leakage.” It’s the Host’s loss of right-discernment. The wrong molecules and microbes cross the line. The immune system overreacts. Soon, a bottle smashes. The nightspot turns into a bar fight.

The good news? We’re the owners. We can retrain the bouncers. We can rebuild the guest list. We can restore the velvet rope. [This is what we do, clinically.]

The To-Do

Start with the Four R’s of Gut Gatekeeping

1. Feed the right crowd. Daily prebiotics: diverse fibers, polyphenols, resistant starch. This is how we grow disciplined “regulars.”

2. Support the enforcers. Digestive enzymes and bitters, bile-supportive nutrients (artichoke, curcumin, healthy fats) support microbial order.

3. Reinforce the barrier with nutrients that help rebuild the gut lining and keep the rope strong. Glutamine, butyrate, zinc, vitamin A from cod liver oil, n-acetyl glucosamine, and omega-3.

4. Train the bouncer, calibrate the immune scanner. This means balanced exposure, not sterilization. Your sIgA learns by practice—don’t bubble-wrap your biology. A few wild and crazy guys add personality and keep the immune system vigilant.

Our health isn’t just what we eat. It’s what our gut processes let in to the party. He felt too emotionally charged to be objective because of the 1980s medical estrogen hormone replacement that caused thousands of breast- and uterine cancers (now prescribed in lower doses), and the unnecessary hysterectomies that sterilized women and upset their lifetime hormone balance. [Can’t blame his nod to accurate medical history.] Besides, he said that I could approach this subject with grace, kindness, and aplomb being a centenarian woman (Texan) and descendant of Benjamin Franklin. Glad to help.

I just returned from my favorite opera, The Magic Flute by Mozart. (Don’t tell Timothée Chalamet, the audience loved it). And I loved Tim’s portrayal of Bob Dylan, so I’m musically inspired for this article.

Menopause Music

There comes a moment in every great symphony when the melody softens, the tempo deepens… and the enraptured conductor becomes an instrument.

Menopause is often described as a curtain drop—abrupt, dramatic, a little ominous. Don’t get sandbagged when the body pulls the rope.

But the body is not a stage that goes abruptly dark. It’s a symphonic orchestra. And menopause is not the end of the music. It’s a key motif change into the most dramatic and uplifting movement.

For years, the ovaries sit first chair—lead violin, driving the melody with estrogen and progesterone in a steady, familiar score, the bassoon honking testosterone’s low, steady, a little irreverent, backbone, all with the quiet confidence that keeps the whole piece grounded.

Month after month, the lunar cycle plays with precision. Predictable phrasing. Reliable tempo. Then, gradually, the first chair unravels the cadenza and steps back into orchestration.

There’s a musician’s legend of a soloist so lost in his cadenza that he couldn’t end it, the orchestra couldn’t rejoin. He was lost, running the scale-one half step at a time—until a voice from the audience called out “B-flat! B-flat!) and saved the day. Not a crash. Not a failure. A transition to pass the baton (relay, and conductor’s) back to the natural evolution of the music.

Because the music doesn’t stop. The question becomes: Who is conducting?

Adrenals Connection

Not flashy. Not center stage. But the quiet conductor—hands steady, listening deeply, shaping what remains into something coherent, even beautiful. Here’s where the story splits.

In one woman’s body, the conductor is seasoned—responsive, well-rested, attuned. The orchestra adjusts. The tempo shifts. A new movement naturally emerges, different but grounded, more profound, more uplifting.

In another’s, the conductor is frazzled—overworked, under-resourced, trying to hold together musicians who struggle with the erratic baton-waiving and can’t interpret the music’s evolution.

Same orchestra. Different experience.

Menopause doesn’t create the discord. It reveals how well the system can play without its former conductor and first chair violinist dominating the limelight.

The adrenals have always been there—keeping time behind the scenes. And now it’s their time to conduct, time to shine.

Yes, they produce cortisol, the percussion section everyone notices when it gets too loud. But they also produce DHEA prohormone— a quieter sound in the orchestra, like the clarinet, slipping between registers, carrying the harmony forward when the melody shifts.

Adrenals: The New Conductor

In menopause, they take over estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone production necessary for bone, skin, and cognition health without maintaining reproductive function. Adipose (fat) cells pitch in. The score shifts from performance to preservation, a quieter passage that sustains the music without driving the former melody, new horizons beckoning.

DHEA is flexibility. A way for the body to adapt, to soften the transition, to keep the music moving even as the key shifts. It is the clarinet line in the score—quiet, adaptable, offering a theme picked up by estrogen’s violin and progesterone’s viola, or testosterone’s brass, depending on what the body needs in that moment.

Unless, of course, the adrenal-conductor is exhausted.

Modern life has a peculiar way of turning orchestras into noise.
• Late-night light that scrambles the opening cue
• Erratic meals that throw off timing
• Constant stress turns percussion into a cymbal crash instead of a measured beat
• A nervous system that never quite leaves rehearsal mode.

Over time, the rhythm blurs. The sections drift. The conductor compensates—faster here, louder there—just to keep the piece recognizable.

And then Nature’s menopause arrives, and asks, “Can you still hold the music together while stepping into the woman’s grand movement?

Menopause: The Woman’s Grand Movement

This is where many are told the solution is to inject a substitute soloist—to replace what the first chair once provided with a horse-urine synthetic. Sometimes that has its place, but it’s only the third-best option. (Second best is bioidentical, first best is Nature’s healthy, happy menopause.)

But there is another, quieter path: restore the conductor. Even better, maintain the conductor throughout life. Because the goal is not to replay the old symphony exactly as it was. It’s to play the exciting next movement well. (And if you’re Dylan revisiting Highway 61, you’ll introduce a circus/police novelty whistle.)

Two women reach this rite of passage in their life’s music:
• One has spent years in quiet rehearsal—protecting sleep, stabilizing energy, allowing real pauses between movements. Her conductor is responsive. The orchestra listens. The key change lands… and the music continues without missing a beat.
• The other has been pushing tempo for decades—running crescendos into exhaustion, skipping rests, forcing volume where finesse was needed. Her conductor lifts the baton…the sections hesitate, the tuba player sputters clearing his spit-valve, and the oboist squawks changing a reed.

Not broken. Just depleted—out of sync. It’s physiology asking for leadership.

The body runs on rhythms—circadian, ultradian, infradian—nested canons that depend on tempo. Morning light sets the opening note. Darkness cues the closing phrase. Meals, movement, rest—each one a subtle signal to stay in rhythm.

Disrupt that innate, natural rhythm, and the music frays. Honor it, and even complex transitions feel intentional.

For younger readers, this is the part worth underlining: You are already in rehearsal.
<div Every steady (non-processed, fast-food) meal keeps the tempo even. Every moment of true rest—real silence, not background noise—returns the orchestra to tune. Every avoidance of the media generating angst and anger with rehearsed catastrophes helps keep the orchestra in tune.

Even the quiet electrolyte minerals—sodium (yes, salt), potassium, magnesium—are like tuning pegs, small but essential. Ignore them, and everything sounds just slightly off. Support them, and the whole system resonates.

These are not anti-aging tricks. These are musicianship. Because menopause is not an ambush. It’s a passageway into the fullness of a woman’s life-music.

And what carries us through is not just what the ovaries once played, but how well the entire orchestra responds when the score changes.

This is where the body’s life narrative turns—from loss to mastery. From performer to conductor.

Matriarchal Wisdom

The time of matriarchal wisdom is not meant to be a frantic scramble to recover the old melody. It’s a deeper listening. A steadier hand. A capacity to hold complexity without losing coherence.

Menopause is not a fading of the light, but a change in its quality—less flicker, more glow—where wisdom gathers, and a woman’s presence becomes her greatest contribution. — WWJ

When the adrenals are healthy—when the conductor is present—the music doesn’t collapse when the first chair steps back. It evolves.

The tempo may soften. The phrasing may deepen. There may even be a surprising cadenza—moments of clarity, insight, grounded strength that were harder to access in the faster movements of earlier years.

Not lesser music. Different music. And perhaps, in its own way, more complete. So no, menopause is not the coda of the performance. It is the moment the baton matters most.

Menopause is the season when wisdom takes the lead, and life’s meaning finds its clearest voice.- WWJ

And a well-prepared conductor does not fear a key change. She shapes it.

Top Five Ways to Support the Adrenals (Keep the Conductor Steady)

Protect the opening and closing notes (sleep + light)
Anchor your day with morning light and honor darkness at night. Sleep is when the conductor studies the score—miss it, and everything drifts off tempo.

Stabilize the rhythm (blood sugar balance)
Eat real meals with protein, healthy fats, and fiber. Organic, of course. Skip erratic snacking and sugar spikes. They overgraze, riverbanks collapse, songbirds vanish, and the whole place slowly unravels.

Put the wolves back, and—magically—everything re-organizes. Trees return. Rivers steady. Songbirds sing in Nature’s primal canons. Life diversifies.

Same story with purple starfish. Remove them from tide pools and one aggressive mussel takes over. Diversity dies. Ecology flattens.

Nature teaches this lesson repeatedly.

Health is not about how many organisms you have.
It’s about which ones set the rules.

That’s the keystone species!

Keystone probiotics are not the loudest, most flamboyant bacteria in the room. They’re often present in small numbers, yet they exert outsized influences.

Keystone probiotics have a profound influence on not just the gut ecology, but the entire body, whereas the rank-and-file transients have little influence. Keystones determine pH, oxygen gradients, bile flow, immune tone, and microbial traffic patterns. They oversee production of post-biotic compounds that the glands and organs need to perform their jobs.

Thus the gut-brain, gut-heart, gut-thyroid, gut-GLP-1 (weight optimizer), gut-hormone, gut-everything connections.

Case in Point (one of ten-thousand): the probiotic, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, makes butyrate required as a coloncyte-cell energy source, prevents leaky gut, lowers inflammation (NF-kB), supports immune health, nourishes the brain and heart, and improves mitochondrial insulin sensitivity. [A.k.a. a very big deal.]

In plain English: Keystone species are ecological bouncers.<s> </s>They decide who thrives, who behaves, and who gets evicted.

Most probiotics are mere tourists. Keystone probiotics are city planners.

Tourist microbes pass through waving tiny flags. They may offer a brief benefit, but they don’t change (terraform) the terrain. Keystone species move in, reroute the plumbing, adjust the lighting, and rewrite the lease agreement. They don’t just add activity. They stabilize entire body-systems.

This matters because the gut is not a bucket. It’s an ecosystem.

And ecosystems don’t heal by adding more animals. They heal when keystone species return and order is restored.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Keystone probiotics don’t just exist. They produce. Short-chain fatty acids. Indoles. Polyamines. Barrier-strengthening signals. Neuroactive compounds. Immune-calming messages. Busy like beavers, bees, ants, squirrels, and caffeinated octopi folding fitted sheets.

If probiotics are musicians, post-biotics are the music. And most probiotic products sold to consumers never play a note.

Now, about the lab issue.

Most commercial probiotics are in-bred, repeatedly cloned, petri-dish survivors. They’re selected for shelf life, oxygen tolerance, and manufacturing convenience—not for thriving inside human beings’ bile, enzymes, acids, immune surveillance, and microbial competition.

Releasing these strains into the gut is a bit like releasing zoo animals into the wild with a laminated map and a snack coupon. They may last a while. Some even behave. But they rarely re-establish ecosystems.

Keystone probiotics are different.

They are typically human-derived, wild-type organisms that co-evolved with digestion, immunity, and circadian rhythms. They understand bile. They communicate with immune cells. They coordinate with other microbes instead of competing blindly.

These special species are dedicated anaerobes-they cannot survive in oxygen environments. This makes them difficult to stabilize and deliver in traditional oral probiotic capsules. It’s why they have been missing from the consumer market, until now. Innovative labs, such as Alimentum, have patented methods to deliver vital keystone species via capsules. Thus, a recent accomplishment worthy of the description, “revolutionary breakthrough.”

When keystone species return, the gut shifts from chaos to community. care.” As usual, there’s the marketing story—and then there’s reality.

WellnessWiz Jack’s Short Stack’s verdict is firm: you’re not getting your probiotic money’s worth. We’ll show you how probiotics actually work—and when they don’t.

Most probiotic mistakes begin with a bad metaphor.

Somewhere along the way, the gut got recast as a war zone. Bad bugs are the enemy. Probiotics are good reinforcements. Antibiotics are carpet bombs. Victory is measured in CFUs (Colony-Forming Units) deployed and casualties eliminated.

A CFU is the science-term for one microbe (or small clump, thus a quantity) that can grow into a visible colony under controlled conditions. Like rabbits in the carrot patch.)

War zone thinking is a complete SNAFU (Situation Normal All Fouled  Up).

Your gut is not a battlefield. It’s an ecosystem—more rainforest than trench warfare. And ecosystems don’t thrive on shock-and-awe tactics. They collapse.

Your belly-garden requires gardeners, not soldiers.

When people feel bloated, inflamed, or foggy, they often reach for probiotics like calling in air support. More troops. Bigger battalions. Multi-strains, 100-billion-CFU mega-blends with names that sound like elite special forces.

What could possibly go wrong? Plenty. In fact, this is where things go FUBAR (Fouled :-) Up Beyond All Recognition).

Balance. In ecosystems, ratios (balance) of different species working together matters more than brute force.

Diversity. Different species support different functions via post-biotic compounds, such as making butyrate for colon cell energy, or Vitamin B12 for cell metabolism.

Timing. Take probiotics with food for lower stomach acid attrition, away from antibiotics to avoid probiotic instant death, in the morning for better immune sampling (your immune system’s ability to determine probiotics as friends), less risk of fermentation.

Context. Drop a herd of animals into a damaged habitat with no food, water, or shelter, and we don’t restore the ecosystem—we feed the buzzards. The same is true in the gut.

If stomach acid is low (more pathogenic species downstream), bile flow is sluggish, fiber intake anemic, and inflammation already smoldering, adding random microbes is not “support” — it’s confusion. Friendly organisms arrive to a hostile environment, can’t do their jobs, thus signal distress. The brain interprets this as “probiotics don’t work” or “I reacted badly.”

The probiotics work—the strategy was flawed.

The war metaphor encourages a dangerous idea: that microbes are either good guys or bad guys. In reality, most are neutral actors whose behavior depends largely on terrain, food supply, and neighboring species. Today’s ally can be tomorrow’s nuisance under different conditions.

Ecosystems don’t need enemies eliminated. They need life-support relationships restored.

That statement above is mostly true thanks to keystone probiotic species. But there is a time—a limited time—for a pathogen purge or culling out noxious predators.

A healthier model looks less like a battlefield and more like land management. Improve soil (terrain) quality. Restore waterways. Reintroduce species thoughtfully. Remove chronic stressors. Stop dropping bombs and hoping for peace.

Probiotics, when used well, are not soldiers. They’re gardeners, messengers, teachers, and transient visitors helping nudge the system back toward coherence.

Treat them like a standing army, and you’ll stay stuck in perpetual conflict. Treat the gut like an ecosystem, and—remarkably—it often remembers how to regulate itself.

The gut doesn’t need a general. It needs a gardener.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Action: Tend Your Belly Garden

Stop fighting your gut. Start tending it. Here’s insights from clinical nutrition.

Before adding probiotics, prepare the terrain: eat real food, chew it, restore stomach acid, support bile flow, and calm inflammation. Microbes don’t thrive in chaos—no matter how “beneficial” the label claims.

Feed the residents you already have. Fiber, polyphenols, and fermented foods (when tolerated) provide cooperative support. Water matters. Sleep matters. Stress matters. Gardens respond to seasons, not force.

This is what a competent clinical nutritionist does: first with supplements to effect gentle change, then with lifestyle recommendations to maintain.

When you use probiotics, think seed packets, not standing armies. In clinical nutrition, we choose keystone, human-adapted strains targeted for a purpose such as gut—>immune, brain, hormone, metabolic support. Use them briefly, and reassess.

If things worsen (bloating, gas), don’t double down—change conditions. Ensure your transit time is optimal.

Pull weeds gently (a.k.a. pathogen purge purification programs). Antibiotics, antimicrobials, and strong cleanses are sometimes necessary—but they are tools, not lifestyles. Every burn leaves bare ground until you restore it.

Most of all, trust biology over bravado. A battlefield demands victory. A garden rewards stewardship.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Revisit the Silence DuGood articles to understand the on-going concerns.

We all have PFAS in our bodies. No one is exempt. Protecting ourselves from G.I. tract absorption is easy. The impact of environmental contamination on future generations is ominous. Being informed is defense against further deception.

PFAS-Forever Chemicals are direct causes of cancer, birth defects, liver and thyroid diseases, decreased immunity, hormone disruption, and other serious health conditions including altering (shrinking) baby’s brains during their first 5 years of life1. The U.S. Government just authorized PFAS pesticides for our food supply.2

Science says the mother’s Forever Chemicals cause smaller brain development in their baby’s brains. How?

PFAS’s pass through the placenta barrier and accumulate in the unborn baby’s brain, directly affecting how neurons and neural stem cells grow and mature. Fetal exposure is considered irreversible.

PFAS are everywhere, ubiquitously present in pregnancies around the world. PFAS pollution is having an effect on brain development across the human species. Even worse, it’s not just high exposures; its low exposures harming everyone.

Being ‘forever,’ we can’t (yet) get them out of the water supply, the soil (food supply), and the air; but we can get them out of our G.I. tracts and even from deeper tissues. Their paid “industry spokes-jokers” a.k.a. “professional prevaricators” say, “There’s no evidence that a smaller brain and retarded brain development makes people dumb.”

Au contraire.

Science clearly states that PFAS’s lowers our children’s intelligence. Prenatal exposure to specific PFAS (like PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS) is associated with:
1) a decrease in children’s performance IQ3
2) reduced cognitive outcomes, learning, and memory4
3) behavioral issues like ADHD5

Intelligence is not necessarily brain size. It’s neuron density, cortical folding, synaptic connectivity, and specialization that impacts “smarts” (along with brain size). Countering that argument is the clear scientific proof that Alzheimer’s brains shrink and are smaller.

What can we do?
1. See Silence DuGood articles for microbial solutions
2. Stop buying PFAS forever chemical products
3. Inform your government representatives (send them the articles)
4. what’s going on with the see-saw science of alcohol. Changeable as a squirrel chasing its tail in Texas weather.

One minute a little red wine is good for the heart, a key to longevity, nectar of the gods; and the next “any alcohol shortens your lifespan,” as if Grim-the-Reaper has been freshly promoted to bartender.

The human species has a penchant for misrepresenting truth via science. Here, let’s sort out the sunshine from the organic grapes, clear the must from the vinegar, and embrace the truth without a designated driver.

So who’s right? Was Grandma’s sip of table wine extending her life… or running a clandestine biochemical heist on her mitochondria?

Pull up a barstool. Order something non-flammable. Let’s apply wisdom for wellness.

Two Truths Walk into a Bar: Why the long face?

Science is not confused — people are.

Science is like Nature’s court reporter; it just writes down exactly what happened. Humans, on the other hand, interpret the transcript through caffeine, confirmation bias, hidden-agenda “consensus,” and headlines to sell the sponsor’s product.

Only humans turn science into the little truth that tells a big lie. Here’s what’s really going on:

Old science said: A little wine is healthy! Enjoy the hidden flavors (cherry, oak, english peas, dirty feet), enjoy the camaraderie, relax, it’ll do your heart good.

New science said: Any alcohol shortens life!

They’re both right, but they’re talking about two different characters in the same sitcom.

• One character is polyphenols— the humble antioxidant heroine found in grapes, berries, coffee, chocolate, and the Mediterranean grandma who lived to 108 and still baked bread barefoot on Tuesday. Let’s call her Polly.

• The other character is ethanol— the toxic, flammable party crasher that your liver would happily reassign to another department if only it could file HR paperwork and it not get a promotion. Let’s call her Ethyl.

Early studies accidentally (deliberately?) credited Polly’s virtues to Ethyl’s presence. Wine’s reputation rose on the quiet genius of the organic grape—grown on volcanic earth alive with microbes, sunlit afternoons and well-timed rains, wafting winds coaxing sugars and protective compounds from precious, century’s old vines. Ahhh, the grape is life in all its splendor.

But alas, as patriarch Noah (of ark fame) discovered, the grape makes wine, and wine makes a man hope nobody is taking notes for the next four-thousand years.

We’ll leave it to the scholars if Biblical wine was “bacteria-purified water,” not an intoxicant. If Jesus was the life of the party, or the water purification expert.

Old Research: Why Wine Looked Heroic

Back in the 1980s-90s, researchers looked at Mediterranean cultures and found something astonishing: Hey! These lucky oldsters drink wine every day… and they’re healthier than we are!

Excitedly lifting their glass and admiring the legs settling, they failed to accommodate that these “blue zone” folks:
• Walked everywhere
• Ate whole, seasonal foods
• Used culinary and medicinal herbs
• Did not take prescription drugs
• Were not chronically stressed
• Had strong community ties
• Ate fermented foods
• Consumed wine with meals
• Took regular naps (Siesta! A health strategy lacking in modern work ethics.)

Wine wasn’t the superfood. The lifestyle was.

Wine was simply the tasty, pre-siesta beverage served inside the protective bubble of anti-inflammatory living.

Assuming wine is a health food is like assigning Olympic athletes’ prowess to their espresso, not 20-years of training.

Early studies highlighted our friend Polly. Specifically polyphenols—resveratrol, quercetin, catechins. These super-healthy compounds improve nitric-oxide signaling — blood pressure, reproductive performance, athleticism, immune performance, motility, glucose regulation, mitochondrial vitality, activate longevity genes. They perform internal housekeeping like a team of molecular elves.

But tippling scientists blurred the line between the grape and the grog. Polly did the healing; Ethyl rode in as an undesirable wingwoman.

New Research: Ethyl Gets Caught (Surprise!)

Today we have the statistical muscle to peer deeper. Could have easily discerned this with the smarts of a fruit fly by observing Nature, but now science tells us what we already know: ethanol is addictive, causes hangovers (poisoning), can cause cancer, and makes some people mean and murderous. Add head-on collisions, and gramps passed out in the gutter. Not Nature’s portrait of healthy vigor.

Today’s science applies: Large-scale population genetics, tech that measures DNA damage, and sensors that track mitochondrial distress. Just the facts, ma’am.

They apply models that control for lifestyle, income (access to better nutrition), exercise, diet, toxins, pollution.

Again, we must confront reality: Ethanol — no matter how artisanal, organic, small-batch, oak-aged, ancient-vined, or blessed by a Tuscan monk — damages DNA at every dose.

Beer is ±6% ethanol; wine is ±14%, and distilled spirits are ±40-50%. Choose your poison.

Yikes! Why DNA Damage?

Because when your liver breaks down ethanol, it creates acetyldehyde, a delightfully named carcinogenic little rascal that:
• Scrambles DNA
• Slows mitochondrial respiration (life energy)
• Weakens gut tight junctions (leaky gut)
• Inflames endothelial tissue
• Interferes with hormone metabolism
• Contributes to cancer risk

So, it turns out the Mediterranean grandma wasn’t living longer because she drank wine… she was living longer despite it. Same for centenarian, George Burns, famous for one martini and one cigar a day. Good night, Gracie.

Nature has no dog in the fight. A simple verdict:
• Wine contains valuable plant medicine
• Alcohol is inherently toxic
• Context determines whether the net effect is tolerable or harmful.

This explains why a small glass of wine at a 3-hour Mediterranean sunset dinner might clear the palate and not hurt a thing — whereas the same glass guzzled during a modern stress-bomb evening (blue light, deadlines, microplastics, news alerts, and the dog dying from eating your prescription) can noticeably nudge the body toward trouble.

Your system is already juggling forever poisons (PFAS), endocrine disruptors, circadian disruption, and the Wi-Fi router pulsing at 2 a.m. Ethyl jumps into the circus, and something’s going to hit the floor.

Note: See WellnessWiz Substack, Silence DuGood’s expose on Dupont’s fluorocarbons (PFAS) and the part two on what to do about it.

WellnessWizdom Takeaways

Here’s the distilled, de-flame-able, nature-aligned position:

1. If your overall lifestyle is natural and robust, a small glass of wine (with food, slow pace, community, laughter) is not likely to be catastrophic. The body has existing methods to detoxify ethanol normally acquired from fermenting foods in the G.I. tract.

2. If you choose to love beer, wine, or a wee dram as part of your lifestyle, you can supplement to help your liver —N-Acetylcysteine (500 mg), Thiamine (25 mg plant derived (not synthetic), Alpha-Lipoic Acid (200 mg), L-Cysteine (or reduced glutathione), Milk Thistle. You won’t break even, but you’ll enjoy a lower interest rate.

3. If you’re fighting inflammation, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues, dysbiosis, mitochondrial strain, toxin load, or taking medications; alcohol nudges things in the wrong direction every time. Learn to enjoy an organic veggie juice.

4. Anything wine can do, organic grapes can do better — without the acetyldehyde tax. [Note organic. Commercial grapes are dirty dozen slathered with pesticides.]

You can still impress your friends when you sniff a grape and say, “Mendocino … north of the Russian River … escarpment … umm 2800 feet elevation … 2024, no 2025 because the rains came a week late … yum.”

Want nitric oxide support? Use organic beet extract, cacao, grape polyphenols, or quercetin.

Want digestive stimulation? Use organic bitters, lemon water, ginger tincture, or apple-cider vinegar.

Want relaxation? Use L-theanine, magnesium, adaptogens, or a good laugh (modern folks want CBD products).

Want to feel sophisticated holding a pretty glass? Raise a sparkling water with a twist.

Aromatic, cultural, occasionally romantic — yes. But anything alcohol can give, it takes back with interest. Net loss to health.

Just some horse sense, now dished out with blatant science validation.

And as for Nature? She’s not confused at all. She’s been quietly whispering the same message since the first grape fell off the vine: Enjoy the fruit. Be cautious with the firewater. You decide.

WellnessWiz’s Substack is a reader-supported publication. The Plant That Does More Than Soothe Sunburns

Ouch! Got a kitchen burn or too much Texas sun skinny dipping at Hippie Hollow?

You might grab an ice cube—or errantly butter (now considered a deep fat fryer)—but the best remedy could be (should be!) sitting on your window sill or by the kitchen door.

It’s organically-grown aloe vera. You knew that, right?

Beyond soothing sunburns, science shows eleven lesser-known gifts that make aloe a true household healer: blood-sugar balance, improved digestion, immune and skin support—the works.

Well, Aloe Dolly — Matchmakers, Pharaohs, & Pharmacies

Aloe vera’s résumé glows with a 6,000-year-old pedigree. Egyptian royalty prized it, Sumerian tablets praised its “bowel benefits,” and Cleopatra slathered it on her royal cheeks (all four).

India’s Ayurvedic healers dubbed it Ghritkumari, the “silent healer,” to support blood sugar, nutrition, and lipid balance (cholesterol).

Many historical figures, coincidentally all with the same middle name: Alexander The Great, Plini The Elder, and Dioscorides The Surgeon, were all aglow about aloe’s healing attributes for wounds.

The Bible name-drops it five times, from Solomon to Jesus.

Clearly, history has a crush on aloe. Perhaps we should take heed. It deserves an honored place in our lives.

Aloe Leaf’s Triple Life

Herbalists know each leaf hides three different medicinal characters:

• Outer Skin – The plant’s armor seals in moisture and deters hungry bugs. It’s potent and a tad toxic—especially to cats. Fortunately, kitty’s smart enough not to snack on it.
• Latex (yellow goo) – A strong laxative medicine. Powerful stuff, but best used under an herbalist’s guidance.
• Inner Gel – The all-purpose goo: cooling, soothing, hydrating, full of polysaccharides like acemannan — a healing sugar. This is our daily-use elixir for inside and out.

Aloe Vera. The Succulent with a Secret Resume

1. Digestive Dynamo

Aloe doesn’t just sit pretty in the windowsill—it moonlights as a gut whisperer. The inner-leaf gel helps calm the intestinal tantrums, smooth out acid reflux dramas, and keep things gliding along at the right pH (acid/alkaline balance).

Think of it as the peacekeeper at a family reunion where your stomach, pancreas, and esophagus have stopped speaking to each other. Regular use of inner-leaf aloe can help calm inflammation, support pH balance, digestion, and motility.

WellnessWiz Tips: Sip 1–2 oz. before meals for two weeks. It’s a gentle experiment with real results—and no Rx PPI (Protein Pump Inhibitor) baggage like bone loss, impaired nutrient uptake, SIBO, kidney disease, fatty liver, magnesium meltdown, or that “Why am I suddenly low in B-12?” mystery.

2. Immune Tune-Up

Loaded with minerals, amino acids, and enzymes, aloe is your immune system’s green smoothie. Its star performer, acemannan, rallies T-cells and NK-cells faster than caffeine hits a barista-driven jolt. Cytokines start chatting and coordinate a balanced immune response via interleukin-1 (IL-1). Aloe’s glycoproteins chase off viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other microscopic freeloaders.

Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, and E-complex plus selenium and zinc neutralize free radicals, preserving immune cell integrity.

WellnessWiz Tips: Add a splash of aloe to your morning lemon water for an immune-smart start.

<picture></picture>

3. Make-Up Take Down

Ever met a plant that could out-perform a make-up remover and out-ethic an environmental policy? Here’s make-up remover that won’t require a legal disclaimer or a priest. You’ll look so fresh, your mirror might ask for your ID. Mascara comes off faster than you can say, “I was just watching a sad movie.”

WellnessWiz Tips: Have you done any anointing lately? Mix aloe gel with equal parts organic olive or avocado oil for a clean, toxin-free make-up remover that leaves skin glowing.

8. Joint Joy

Aloe has lovely analgesic and anti-inflammatory powers. It doesn’t stop at skincare—it’s got a side hustle in pain management and joint diplomacy. When elbows creak and knees file complaints, aloe steps in like a slick-tongued negotiator: cooling tempers, soothing friction, and restoring peace to the realm of cartilage.

WellnessWiz-Tips: Mix with a dash of DMSO and rub on sore joints for soothing, fast-absorbing comfort. This serves the body’s natural self-curative processes.

9. Pressure Perfect

Your arteries like to stay flexible and drama-free with excellent blood pressure. Aloe helps by boosting nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter and signaling molecule that keeps blood vessels open and tension low for smoother flow, calmer heart, happier pipes.

WellnessWiz-Tips: Start with two ounces daily and monitor improvements—your arteries will thank you. Mix with tasty, organic beet powder (purveyor of nitric oxide) for turbo blood pressure support.

10. Serious Medicine, Sugar Britches

Aloe doesn’t just soothe burns—it schools your metabolism. Inside lurks molecules with a master plan for blood sugar balance.

Insulin Sensei. Acemannan and its polysaccharide pals coach insulin receptors to let glucose in smoothly—no pancreas panic, no sugar tantrums.

Slow and Steady Wins the Glucose Uptake Race. Aloe’s gel forms a silky gut matrix that slows carbohydrate digestion, turning glucose spikes into scenic hills instead of cliff dives.

Inflammation Eviction Notice. Phenolic compounds like aloesin and aloin tell cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6) to simmer down, easing metabolic inflammation in liver, pancreas, and fat tissue.

Liver Logic. Aloe nudges the liver to stash glycogen (concentrated cell energy) and chill on cranking out new sugar molecules. Translation: fewer roller-coaster highs, smoother fasting levels.

Micronutrient Wingmen. Chromium, zinc, magnesium, and manganese ride shotgun, keeping insulin sharp, while antioxidant enzymes mop up oxidative chaos.

WellnessWiz Tips: Start slow—one tablespoon of concentrated gel three times a day. (Your gut will thank you for the gradual introduction.)

11. Nature’s Marvelous Disinfectant

Chemical sanitizers nuke everything in sight—good, bad, and microbiome alike—then wonder why superbugs throw a party. Aloe takes a classier route. It kills germs the botanical way, with compounds that disinfect without declaring war. It’s terrain support, not scorched earth.

WellnessWiz-Tips: Mix one ounce aloe with four ounces water. Add a splash of white vinegar for extra oomph. Use on hands, faces, counters, or air.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Aloe-lujah!

From burn balm to blood sugar balancer, aloe vera earns its place beside your vitamins and first-aid kit. You can see it in their eyes. They’re strong swimmers, but being tail-deep in water flips their panic switch.

I’ve seen it first-hand. When field mice fall into the pool, they don’t exactly start a backstroke routine. They flail, grasp at straws, and are one squeak away from a heart attack. I keep an escape ramp in place for such occurrences, but in panic they sometimes don’t find it.

As one wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie (wee mousie) went under for the third time, he beemed a look of gratitude as I scooped him out with a skimmer. He clung to it like a sailor to driftwood, panting, too tired to fear me.

After naming him Mickey, (the one before was Mortimer) and a short rehab in a shoebox, I relocated him to the woods — far from the siren call of the no-chlorine pool’s sparkle, the yard snake, hawk, and fox. Life’s not all peanut butter and cheese for rodents.

Turns out, Science backs up what my pool-side rescue missions already knew. Rodents go berserk—adrenaline pumping panic-paddlers—when they can’t feel the bottom.

Famous Gut—>Brain Study

An Irish researcher, John Cryan, tested this formally. He plopped his lab rats (rodents, not colleagues) into a water basin. They paddled in blind panic for about four minutes, then gave up — a textbook case of “behavioral despair.” Blood tests showed stress hormones spiking a hundredfold.

Then Cryan tested another group —again lab rats, not co-workers. Same splashdown, but with a twist: he’d been feeding them a probiotic superstar, Lactobacillus rhamnosus — the same bacterium that turns milk into yogurt with a voila!

Ker-plop. Into the drink they went. But this batch stayed cool. No frantic splashing, no surrender, no exhausting their mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate energy production. None were allowed water wings.

They swam purposefully, conserving energy, and kept at it for six minutes and counting. Bloodwork revealed stress hormones half that of the control group. Their GABA receptors — brain chemistry’s brake pedal — were calm and content.

Adapt or Be a Drowned Rat

The probiotic-fed rats still found swimming stressful, but panic wasn’t their default. L. rhamnosus gave them an evolutionary tail-up: keep calm, chive on, think straight, keep paddling.

Gamma-Amino-Butyric Acid, a.k.a. GABA (not to be confused with Fred Flintstone’s exclamation) is a glorious neurotransmitter that quiets panic, boosts resilience, and helps both rats and humans make rational choices under fire and water.

Whether it’s a lab basin or life itself, GABA is the difference between “I’ve got this” and “we’re all doomed.” Maybe a yabba-dabba-do is appropriate.

So yes, if you’re a yogurt-eater, you’ll handle your next metaphorical dunking with more grace. You’ll paddle longer before despair kicks in.

Or you can take a probiotic supplement containing L. rhamnosis along with the all-important pre-biotic to feed and help it germinate and make amazing post-biotic compounds.

But Cryan didn’t stop there (PETA warning). He repeated the test after cutting the lab rats’ vagus nerves — the gut-brain communication super-highway.

Vagus Nerve <—>Brain Communication

Vegas rules don’t apply here—what happens in the gut gets reported upstairs.

Some 80–90% of vagus traffic flows upward, sending the brain constant update memos about digestion, inflammation, microbial metabolites, and the state of the enteric nervous system (the gut’s “brain”). These messages influence mood, appetite, stress response, and even decision-making speed.

The remaining 10–20% of line usage is downward commands from the brainstem — adjusting things like gastric acid secretion, peristalsis (motility), enzyme release, heart rate, and immune tone (modulation) in the gut lining. [Heart rate too high? Consider gut rejuvenation.]

With their vagus link severed, the rat’s probiotic’s Zen magic vanished. They freaked out like their un-supplemented cousins.

Mood, Calm, Ability to Handle Stress, & Survivability Begin in the Gut

Proof, at last!

Gut microbes talk directly to the brain via the vagus nerve. Mental calm begins in the intestines.

Since that landmark study, scientists worldwide have connected the dots: probiotics influence not just GABA but serotonin (most of which lives in the gut), dopamine, cortisol, and a suite of stress-response pathways.

WellnessWiz’s Substack is a reader-supported publication. And you won’t squeak-out in times of crisis, emergencies, and ordeals. You might even become a good holiday traveler.

So for times when life throws you into deep water — deadlines, drama, flight cancellations, or traffic — Lactobacillus rhamnosus might just help you keep your head above it.
